Popcorn Lung & Vaping: What You Need to Know
By Ohm Premier Vaping
You may have heard the term “popcorn lung” in connection with vaping, but what exactly is it—and should you be concerned?
What Is Popcorn Lung?
“Popcorn lung” is the nickname for a serious lung condition called bronchiolitis obliterans. It causes scarring and narrowing of the small airways in the lungs, leading to symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. The name came from a group of workers at a popcorn factory who developed the condition after inhaling large amounts of diacetyl, a buttery-flavored chemical used in popcorn flavoring.
How Does This Relate to Vaping?
Some early vape liquids—especially dessert or creamy flavors—were found to contain diacetyl. While diacetyl is safe to eat, inhaling it can be harmful. This raised concerns in the vaping community and among health officials.
Is Vaping Linked to Popcorn Lung?
To date, no confirmed cases of popcorn lung have been directly linked to vaping. Most reputable vape manufacturers—especially those in the U.S.—have removed diacetyl from their products. That said, using unregulated or black-market vape products can still pose serious risks.
